Melinda sighed, laying on her hammock in the moonlight. It had been a week since she and Sans had found Papyrus in that store, and things were going smoothly. Every day, they would go to the mainland, have some fun, grab some ice cream, and stroll around looking for more people that could have been linked to them. Sans and Papyrus were helping each other regain memories of the past, with Melinda’s help when needed. She was pleased with the company she had. She had loved the solidary life she had, but she realized that with the right people, she loved having the company as well. Papyrus took the second room in her house, and Sans still slept on the couch, but tonight he had fallen asleep in Melinda’s bed while they all laid on it, talking. Melinda was unsure how Sans would react to waking up next to her, so she went outside to weigh her options. She thought out loud as she did.
“Well,” she started, “Sans probably wouldn’t mind. After all, he did show interest….and that kiss…” she trailed off as she felt the butterflies in her stomach again. “But…it’s too soon for that. I mean, we aren’t even in a relationship! I barely even know him.”
“I do” she heard. She jumped up and fell out of the hammock.
“Ugh! Pap, you scared me! Ow…” she rubbed her head and looked at him.
Papyrus helped her up. “I’m sorry….I didn’t mean to startle you. Who were you talking to?” He looked around.
“Myself.” Melinda said. “When you live alone for so long, you get in the habit of thinking aloud.”
“Oh…that sounds sad and lonely.” Papyrus said.
Melinda laughed. “Actually, I loved being alone here. But I love having you guys here too. I didn’t think I would like having roommates, but you two are great!” She started to blush, but tried to hide it.
Papyrus tilted his head to the side. “I don’t know why you’re trying to hide it.”
“You’re in love with my brother.”
“IN LOVE???” Melinda sort of snapped back. Then she realized how it came out. “I’m sorry. In love? I’m not in love with him! Heh. It’s just…a crush….he’s a really awesome guy, and fun to be around. You can’t fall in love that fast.”
Papyrus smiled a little. “Yes you can. Anything is possible. And honestly, I think he’s head over heels for you, but he doesn’t say it either. I don’t understand why people can’t just admit their feelings. You guys are strange.”
“Oh, and if you started having feelings for someone, you would just be able to walk up to them and say it?” Melinda laughed. “Good luck. Some people aren’t that nice.”
Papyrus shrugged. “I wouldn’t know, really. After all, I am just a monster from the underground.” He looked at his hands. “Or, at least, used to be…”
Melinda smiled. “I know. It’s hard to get used to. You’ll be alright with Sans and I here, and if we can find the others, things will become more familiar.” She looked up at the moon. “What should I do about Sans then? You think I should just come out and ask him if he wants to share a room or whatever? It seems a bit forward if you ask me.”
Papyrus nodded. “I already know he will say yes.”
“Oh really? Well then, I’ll go ask right now!” Melinda said smugly.
Papyrus looked at her, wide eyed. “Well I assumed you would ask him when he wasn’t sleeping.”
Melinda laughed. “I know. But he’s in my bed right now, so….should I wake him up or sleep on the couch?”
Papyrus stopped. He didn’t know how to answer that. “Follow your heart.” He said. He walked away and headed back to the house. Melinda thought a moment and smiled.
“Alright, I’ll follow my heart” she said quietly to herself. She walked back to her house. When she got in, she froze. The idea of getting into bed next to him suddenly terrified her. She decided to lay on the futon instead.
She was starting to drift off, when she felt someone brushing her hair away from her face. She opened her eyes sleepily and looked up. Sans was looking down at her, smiling.
“Y’know, when I accidentally stole your bed, I didn’t expect you to steal mine just to make me more comfortable” He laughed.
Melinda smiled and sat up. “Sorry. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
Sans sat next to her and pulled her closer, so she was cuddling with him. He moved her hair away from her ear and whispered “who says that you would have disturbed me at all?”
Chills ran up Melinda’s spine, and she shivered a little. Sans laughed lightly and looked at her. “I didn’t expect that response.” He smiled.
Melinda just gazed into his eyes. She smiled back at him. Raising her hand up, she touched his face and leaned in to kiss him. She kissed him softly at first, and he reacted the same, but as they kissed, they became more aggressive.
“Hey,” Sans started. “I want to say something, and this might be crazier than what you told me about the video game.” He was speaking softly.
“Hmm?” Melinda’s groggy eyes moved up to meet his.
“I think I love you. There, I said it. I know it’s so soon, I mean, we only just met, but there’s something about you…something I feel I have craved for a long time. And I’ve found it in you. It’s alright if you don’t feel the same way right now. It is really soon, but –”
“Shhhhh Sansy,” Melinda smiled. “I think I love you too.” She giggled, then slowly closed her eyes. She was trying to keep them open, but Sans could see she was clearly very tired. He smiled back to her and wrapped his arm around her. She rested her head on his chest again, and they drifted off to sleep.
Melinda woke up late the next morning. She looked next to her, and Sans was still asleep, but stirring. She smiled. “So perfect,” she whispered. She got out of bed and put on an oversized tee shirt. She took a quick shower and changed into flared black jeans and a sparkly red tank top. She slid on her flip flops, and sat on the futon in the living room. She flipped on the TV and connected it to YouTube. She started flipping through one of her playlists, looking for something good to watch.
Papyrus came out of his room, rubbing his eyes. He saw Melinda on the futon. “Oh! Good morning!” He said.
“Morning Pap,” Melinda replied. “How was your night?”
“Good, I suppose. Didn’t sleep well. I kept waking up to what sounded like someone screaming for help.”
Melinda tried to contain her laughter. “I don’t think anyone needed help Pappy,” she grinned.
Papyrus looked at her with his head tilted. He was so adorable. So naive. He reminded Melinda of a child, but he was much smarter than that. He just had the innocence of a child. He decided not to ask anything, and instead sat beside Melinda on the futon.
“Did you talk to my brother?” He asked.
“I was going to wait until morning, but he woke up in the night and came out here to get me. We ended up sleeping in the bed together last night. So….there was umm…no talking needed.” She looked at Papyrus with a beaming smile.
Papyrus’ eyes widened. “Did you two….”
‘Wellp, there goes his innocence’ Melinda thought. “Y-yes….we did.”
Papyrus looked like he could jump for joy at just the sound of that. “Yes! I knew it! Your feelings can now only blossom forth!”
Melinda blushed a bit. “Ha…yeah…I suppose so.”
